Animal-friendly Serial Microsampling Cuts Costs and Improves Data Quality

We’re pleased to report a new application for the Echo Liquid Handler, with plenty of resources available if you’re interested in learning more. Serial microsampling allows scientists to use fewer animals in studies and reduce costs without compromising data quality. This is particularly useful for scientists conducting pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) research.


Because of its highly precise, low-volume fluid transfers powered by acoustic energy, the Echo Liquid Handlers make it possible to generate useful results from just 1 µL of plasma, compared to 50 µL required for traditional liquid handling solutions. For a typical PK study, this approach allows scientists to use one-ninth the number of mice, simultaneously improving data quality and animal welfare. It also decreases the problematic animal-to-animal variability by allowing repeated sampling of the same animal during testing and makes it possible to use the same animals for PK and PD studies for optimal correlation between drug dose and effect.
